For this guide, we're using a real 2023 Tesla Model Y we tinted with:

• 20% Carbon film on all four doors
• 20% Carbon film over the rear hatch glass
• 35% Carbon film on the entire front windshield

The customer's goals were a combination of appearance, privacy, outward visibility and heat rejection without paying the additional cost of Ceramic film.

Let's break down what Model Y owners should know before getting one tinted.

Tinting the four doors and rear glass typically takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.

Adding the entire front windshield requires approximately another 1½ hours.

The actual 2023 Model Y featured in this guide received 20% Carbon film on the four doors and rear glass with 35% Carbon film on the entire windshield.

From our experience tinting the Tesla Model Y, 20% is our normal recommendation when a customer wants to tint only the two front door windows to closely match the darker factory rear glass.

The rear privacy glass is built into the glass itself rather than being aftermarket window film.

Because lighting, interior color and the factory glass can affect the appearance, no film percentage should be treated as a guaranteed perfect visual match in every condition.

But from our experience, 20% on the two front doors gives the Model Y a close factory-style match.

35% windshield tint is noticeably tinted, but it allows substantially more visible light through than darker percentages such as 20% or 5%.

The owner of this 2023 Model Y specifically chose 35% Carbon film on the entire front windshield because he didn't want the windshield extremely dark.

He wanted to maintain outward visibility while gaining some glare reduction, heat rejection and a darker overall appearance.

We've included real photos taken from inside this Model Y looking through the 35% tinted windshield so customers can see an actual installation rather than relying only on a tint sample.

Keep in mind that cameras don't reproduce window tint exactly as the human eye sees it. Sunlight, cloud cover, camera exposure, screen brightness and surrounding lighting can all affect how dark the windshield appears in a photograph.

When it's done correctly, we'd describe the Model Y as a moderately difficult installation primarily because of the preparation involved.

The individual side windows themselves aren't terrible for an experienced professional installer.

The difficulty comes from taking the necessary precautions around the vehicle.

At Dope Tintings, preparation alone can take approximately 30 to 40 minutes before we're ready to start laying film.

If you're getting the windshield tinted, protecting the dash and electronics becomes especially important.

For this particular Model Y, the customer wanted several things from his tint.

He wanted:

• Privacy
• Appearance
• Heat rejection
• Reduced glare
• Good visibility through the front doors
• A windshield that wasn't excessively dark

He also didn't want to pay the additional price for Ceramic film.

That's why Carbon was a good middle-ground choice for this customer.

We installed:

20% Carbon — four doors and rear hatch glass

35% Carbon — entire front windshield

The result is an interesting example because the front and rear portions of the Model Y don't look identical even though 20% film was installed across the side glass.

That's because the rear of the Model Y already has factory privacy glass.

The customer wanted the two front windows dark enough to provide privacy and complete the appearance of the Model Y, but he still wanted comfortable outward visibility.

For him, 20% provided the balance he wanted.

It's also the percentage we normally recommend when someone comes into our shop with a Model Y and says:

"I just want the two front windows to match the factory rear windows."

From our experience, 20% comes close to the factory appearance of the rear privacy glass.

But this particular customer didn't stop at the two front doors.

He wanted the rear section darker too.

This is an important distinction for Model Y owners.

The rear portion of the vehicle already has darker factory privacy glass.

When we install 20% window film over that existing factory privacy glass, the finished rear windows become considerably darker than the 20% film installed on the clear front door glass.

On this particular Model Y, we'd describe the finished rear appearance as approximately a 5% look.

So visually, this customer's setup looks roughly like:

• Front doors: 20%
• Rear doors: approximately a 5% finished look
• Rear hatch: approximately a 5% finished look
• Front windshield: 35%

That doesn't mean we're claiming the rear windows mathematically measure exactly 5% VLT.

The exact combined VLT depends on the factory glass.

We're describing the finished appearance based on our experience installing 20% film over the Model Y's darker factory rear glass.

The important takeaway is simple:

20% film over factory privacy glass will look considerably darker than 20% film installed over clear glass.

20% film allows approximately 20% of visible light through the film and blocks approximately 80%.

On the clear front door glass of the Model Y, this creates a noticeably dark appearance while still providing more outward visibility than percentages such as 5%.

For this customer, visibility was important.

He wanted privacy, but he didn't want to make the two front doors so dark that he would struggle unnecessarily looking through them.

That's why 20% worked well for his preference.

This 2023 Model Y gives us a particularly useful real-world example because we photographed the vehicle from inside after installing 35% Carbon film on the entire windshield.

That's important because exterior photographs only tell half the story.

A windshield can look dark when you're standing outside of a vehicle, but what really matters to the driver is:

What does it look like looking out?

For this customer, 35% provided the balance he was looking for.

He wanted the windshield tinted enough to help with:

• Glare
• Heat
• Appearance

But he didn't want to go extremely dark.

The customer still wanted to be able to comfortably see through the windshield.

That's why he selected 35% instead of going darker.

The interior photos accompanying this article show the actual view through this Model Y's 35% Carbon windshield.

Again, use photos as a reference rather than an exact representation of what your eyes will see.

Camera exposure and surrounding light can make tint appear lighter or darker in photographs.

There's a significant difference between 35% and 20% when you're talking about an entire windshield.

20% is darker.

35% allows more visible light through.

For this Model Y owner, that additional visibility was important.

We've had plenty of customers who prefer extremely dark vehicles, but we don't believe every customer should automatically choose the darkest percentage.

Tint percentage should be based on what you're comfortable driving with.

That's especially important on a windshield.

The actual windows aren't what make the Model Y a more involved installation for us.

Preparation does.

If we're tinting the complete vehicle, we can spend approximately 30 to 40 minutes preparing the Model Y before film installation begins.

That preparation is part of the job.

When you're working around an electronics-heavy vehicle, saving a few minutes isn't worth risking expensive problems.

At Dope Tintings, we recommend removing the door panels on the Model Y.

That doesn't mean we're saying it's impossible to tint the windows without removing them.

It can be done.

Our concern is getting proper access to the window sweeps.

The sweep is the material inside the door that the glass moves against as the window rolls up and down.

We want sufficient access to get the film properly below that area.

Why?

Because if the film isn't positioned correctly, there's a greater chance that the film can catch and begin peeling as the window repeatedly rolls up and down.

Removing the door panels gives us better access and helps reduce that risk.

Once properly prepared, the front doors aren't particularly terrible for an experienced installer.

The same applies to the rear doors.

The important part for us is getting proper access to the sweeps and installing the film in a way that reduces the chance of peeling later.

This is another example of why we distinguish between:

"Can the window be tinted?"

and

"How do we prefer to tint the window to achieve the finished installation we want?"

The quarter windows are fairly easy for an experienced professional.

The rear hatch glass is also relatively straightforward from an installation standpoint.

Again, the larger concern with this vehicle isn't necessarily that every individual piece of glass is extremely difficult.

It's the complete preparation process and protecting the vehicle while the work is being performed.

The front windshield is where we become particularly cautious.

When installing window film, we use a slip solution.

That means liquid is involved.

On the Model Y, we don't want that liquid finding its way into areas behind or underneath the dashboard where it can potentially reach electronics.

Before tinting the windshield, we protect the dash and close off the accessible gaps between the windshield and dashboard as thoroughly as possible.

For us, this isn't an optional step.

It's part of properly preparing the vehicle.

From our experience, improper water management around electronics can create abnormal electrical behavior.

Potential symptoms can include things such as:

• Windows unexpectedly operating
• Windshield wipers activating
• The interior display flickering
• The horn activating
• Other unexpected electrical behavior

This is one of the reasons we strongly recommend taking a Tesla to an installer who has experience working with these vehicles.

The cost of correcting an electrical problem can quickly outweigh whatever money someone saved by choosing a shop based solely on the lowest tint price.

If heat rejection is one of the main reasons you're tinting your Tesla, we'd normally discuss Carbon or Ceramic instead.

There's also a difference in how we finish the roll-down glass with our Standard package.

Our Standard film is computer cut.

Depending on how the pattern is cut, you may see approximately a 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch gap along the top edge when the window is rolled down.

Customers who want our factory-style edge should look at Carbon or Ceramic.

Our Carbon package for the four doors and rear glass is $374.99.

Carbon is what we consider a sweet spot for many customers who want good heat rejection without paying Ceramic pricing.

It's not Ceramic.

But it is a very good heat-rejection film and represents a noticeable step up from Standard for someone concerned about heat.

Our Carbon package also receives our factory-style edge on roll-down windows, meaning the film goes to the edge of the glass rather than leaving the Standard-package computer-cut gap.

That's why Carbon made sense for the customer featured in this guide.

He wanted:

• Privacy
• Appearance
• Heat rejection
• Better finished edges
• A lower price than Ceramic

Our Ceramic package for the four doors and rear glass is $449.99.

Ceramic is what we'd recommend when the customer's priority becomes maximum heat rejection.

Like Carbon, our Ceramic package receives the factory-style edge on the roll-down windows.

However, there's something important Model Y owners should understand about buying Ceramic solely for maximum heat rejection.

If maximum heat rejection is really your goal, we recommend thinking about the entire glass area of the vehicle rather than only the four doors.

And on a Model Y, that's particularly important because of the amount of glass above and in front of you.

If a customer comes into Dope Tintings and tells us:

"I want maximum heat rejection."

Our ideal recommendation is Ceramic film covering the major glass areas throughout the vehicle:

• All four door windows
• Rear glass
• Entire front windshield
• Panoramic glass roof

Why?

Because if you're trying to reduce heat entering through the glass, leaving major pieces of exposed glass untreated works against that goal.

The Model Y has a particularly large panoramic roof.

If you're investing in Ceramic specifically because you want to maximize heat rejection, we'd discuss that roof along with the windshield and side glass.

No.

Not every Tesla customer chooses to tint the panoramic roof.

From what we see, it's roughly a mixed decision among Tesla owners.

Some want it tinted.

Others don't.

One of the biggest considerations is cost.

By the time someone adds the four doors, rear glass, entire windshield and panoramic roof, the complete installation can become expensive.

That's why many Model Y customers choose to start with the four doors and rear glass, while others add the windshield.

Some stop there.

Others add the panoramic roof later.

Yes.

If you want maximum heat rejection but don't want to pay for every glass area at the same time, you can break the installation into stages.

For example:

Stage 1: Four doors and rear glass

Stage 2: Entire front windshield

Stage 3: Panoramic roof

You don't necessarily have to do everything during one appointment.

The order can also be changed depending on which area matters most to you.

The important distinction is that partially tinting the vehicle isn't the same as completing the full Ceramic setup we'd recommend for someone specifically seeking maximum heat rejection.

If maximum heat rejection is your priority and budget isn't the primary concern, we'd recommend Ceramic and covering all the major glass areas.

But that's not what every customer needs.

For someone who tells us:

"I want good heat rejection, but I don't want to spend Ceramic money."

Carbon is often the sweet spot.

That's exactly what happened with this 2023 Model Y.

The customer didn't want to spend the additional money on Ceramic.

He still wanted meaningful heat rejection.

So Carbon made sense.

This is why we don't automatically recommend the most expensive package.

The right film depends on what you're trying to accomplish and what you're comfortable spending.

No.

The Tesla Model Y does not qualify for our $99.99 or $149.99 window tint specials.

Those specials are designed around qualifying vehicles that we can complete within a specific amount of time.

A Model Y requires substantially more preparation and installation time.

The four doors and rear glass alone generally require approximately 3 to 4 hours, and preparation can account for 30 to 40 minutes before we're even laying film.

The Model Y simply doesn't fit the requirements of those budget specials.

This is important for Model Y owners because there's a major difference between factory privacy glass toward the rear of the vehicle and applying aftermarket window film to other glass.
